The individual consequences: Commitment as factor of social insertion

Now that this phase of convergence has been established, it is high time to scrutinize the migrants who provided the impetus for this dynamic in order to gain a better understanding of how the “18 days” impacted the social trajectories of such individuals. All interlocutors were unanimous in saying that they were deeply affected by this sequence of events. Whether construction workers, students, or affluent professionals, these changes expressed social dynamics specific to the migratory situation. First of all, as interviews showed, the vast majority of the participants were primo-militants for whom the January 25 Revolution played the role of a first socializing political awareness experience. Their new involvement in hitherto unknown or inaccessible spheres also entailed a change in their relationship with their living space. Through contact with other militants, the movement’s actors accessed political apprenticeship and also reconfigured their networks of interpersonal relationships.
